How to Find Your Ideal Drum Teacher
How to Find Your Ideal Drum Teacher Finding the Right Teacher to Learn Drums ChaptersImportant Things to Consider When Choosing a Drum TeacherMusic Schools vs. Private Drum Teachers for Beginner Drum LessonsWhere Can You Find a Drum Teacher Near You?Ever find yourself tapping your foot in synch with the rhythm of a song? Are the drum solos in rock bands and traditional music your favourite part? Are you burning to know what a paradiddle is, how to play a flam and whether triplets have anything to do with pregnancy?Whoâre you gonna call about ghost notes? Should you give polyrhythm a cracker? It sounds like youâre in the grip of drum fever - and in need of answers. The best way to get them is to take drums lessons with a qualified teacher. But how can you find someone to teach you drum rudiments?hand drummingA first drum rudiment to get you hookedYou should also take advantage of the first class to ask the teacher about how they structure their lessons. Are they more theory-oriented? Do they demonstrate drum beats in a way that you can follow at your skill level? Will you be learning drum notation or drum tabs? Will you be getting drum songs to practice with, or just exercises? Will you have to buy your own drums, drumsticks and metronome or do they have drum equipment you can borrow until you are certain your future lies with percussion instruments? All these questions will help you decide if this drum teacher is the one for you.Music Schools vs. Private Drum Teachers for Beginner Drum LessonsOf course, itâs not just the person of the teacher, itâs the support he or she can offer as well. To learn how to play the drums, you have two basic options:A drum school or music schoolA private drum tutorAdvantages and disadvantages of a music schoolMusic schools generally offer two types of lessons:Group lessons, usually at the beginner levelPrivate lessons at the school with one of the school teachersHere are some of the advantages of taking drum instruction at a school:A music school will often have several drum teachers on staff. So if for some reason your drum lessons are cancelled for several weeks - holidays, illness or family emergency - you might be able to continue your course with another teacher.A music school often has their own drum kits. So if you are still unsure if you want to commit to drumming lessons, you can work on the school set until you get your own. Or if your hi-hat stand or ride cymbal is damaged, you can borrow one from the school for practice until you replace your own.Another plus for beginners and intermediate-level students is the availability of practice rooms. Playing drums is a loud passion that the neighbours donât always appreciate. Having practice rooms you can use will help your motivation and decrease your guilt.Schools often give recitals, so you can practise performing in front of an audience. The cons are the fact that the teachers there will have to schedule around a lot of students as well as the guitar teacher and violin lessons all needing the instruction and practice r ooms. Depending on their structure, music schools might have specific hours set aside for you that you canât really deviate from. They lack flexibility and teachers might be forced to adhere to a certain teaching plan.Group drum lessons bring you and other drum afficionados together. Photo credit: thelearningcurvedotca on VisualHuntIf you are taking group drum classes there will be the added inconvenience that the teacher will not be able to focus entirely on you, though being with other musicians passionate about percussion has its own advantages.Of course, if you want a degree in drumming you will have to attend a college of music and complete the course to get your bachelor of music.Private tutoringThe advantage of a private tutor is one-on-one instruction. Your tutor can tailor it to your needs and skill. He or she will be there to motivate you every step of the way and will be able to adapt to your schedule and availability. This means that if your work week is different ever y time, you wonât be tied down to a single time slot. And if you have to cancel, you can make up the lesson another time. There are two ways drum lessons with private tutors can be set up: you go to their house or they come to yours. If you are just starting out, chances are you will be going to their house and using their drum kit; though if you are learning a portable percussion instrument such as the bodhran or bongos, they might bring them with them along for your first music lessons. Once you have graduated to an intermediate or advanced level, they will probably come to your house so you can use your own drums.Find out what type of equipment you need for playing the drums...One-to-one drum lessons will let you progress faster. Photo credit: vanja b. on Visualhunt.comWhere Can You Find a Drum Teacher Near You?Googling local music schools is easy, but how can you find a private drum instructor for drum lessons near me?One solution, of course, is Superprof. Here on the site, we h ave a wide selection of percussion instructors in various types of drums. Some even offer online lessons via webcam if you should happen to live in a drum-free zone. Many offer the first lesson for free.On Superprof, you can read the instructor's full profile, including his studies and experience, before contacting him or her. Youâll know if they are straight out of school or have worked as a percussionist in an orchestra or band. Testimonials will tell you what other students think of that teacher and help you make your choice. The level of experience will, of course, affect the price of the drum lesson.Other portals for finding drum teachers are:DrumteachersDrummingteacherAnother possibility is to go over to a local music college and look at their corkboard or put up a flyer yourself advertising for a teacher. While music students donât have a lot of experience, they have the advantage of still studying themselves, so they have a better understanding of the learning process and the frustration inherent in it. They might be better motivated to teach you drum fills and the rudiments of tuning your instruments than someone who has been doing it for over twenty years. Now learn all you need to know before taking drum lessons...

Angle of Incidence
Angle of Incidence When a ray of light strikes a reflecting surface, then the angle of incidence is the angle formed when the light ray touches the reflecting surface. Angle of incidence is always taken as the measure between the light ray and the normal drawn to the reflecting surface. According to the Laws of reflection, this angle of incidence is equal to the angle of the reflection as well. Example 1: Light ray strikes a reflecting surface making an angle of 20 with the surface. Find the angle of incidence, the angle of reflection and sketch the path of the light ray. Angle of incidence is the angle formed by the light ray with respect to the perpendicular or normal drawn to the reflecting surface. Hence, angle of incidence = 90 - 20 = 70 According to the laws of reflection, angle of incidence = angle of reflection Hence, angle of reflection = 70 Example 2: A ray of light strikes a reflecting surface making an angle of 60 with the surface. Find the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection of the light ray. Given the angle of the light ray made with respect to the reflecting surface = 60 Angle of incidence is the angle formed by the light ray with respect to the normal drawn to the reflecting surface. Hence, angle of incidence = 90 - 60 = 30 According to the laws of reflection, angle of incidence = angle of reflection Hence, angle of reflection = 30

How Tension Affects Your Voice (And What to Do About It!)
How Tension Affects Your Voice (And What to Do About It!) Suzy S. As a beginner singer, its important to understand how unnecessary tension affects your tone and your breath support. Here, NY teacher Nadia B. shares what to keep in mind and how to combat that tension Singing is, in many ways, a very natural activity. We all have a voice, and it is meant to be used to communicate in speech and in music. However, when one delves more into the art of singing through voice lessons, practice, and performance, tension sometimes creeps in. It can seem uncontrollable and the source unidentifiable. The reasons for tension are many, but with the following tips you should be able to better identify how to sing without tension and enjoy a singing practice that is full of expression and requires much less effort. Understanding the Common Causes of Tension To combat tension, the first step is to understand some of the common causes for tension while singing. The most common ones I encounter are a mix of psychological and physical. Trying to be right and using too much effort are two of the biggest factors in tension. To identify whether these apply to you, notice as youâre singing if youâre always trying to fix something. Are you set on singing each passage perfectly, no matter what it takes? You might especially notice this in your singing lessons, when your teacher is observing you. While the intention is good, trying to sing something perfectly can lead to excess mental and physical tension. Using too much effort goes along with this idea. Although singing is a very natural activity, sometimes singers use too much effort in an attempt to sing loudly, more expressively, or faster. So, What Can You Do? Pay attention to your physical reaction and your thoughts as you approach a passage that calls for one of the above qualities. Do you notice an increase in tension, or of negative or panicky thoughts? If so, simply noticing these trends and taking steps to reduce your engagement with these unproductive methods can greatly reduce the amount of tension youâre using. Instead of placing your mental and physical energy in these methods, focus on staying open as you allow the expression to come up and out of you, connecting with the ground to sing louder, and using the breath as a means to propel a fast passage instead of muscular effort or unhelpful thoughts. What Else Causes Tension? Two additional mindsets that lead to excess tension are over-focusing and anxiousness. As you sing, are you overly focused on the voice and the vocal mechanism? While the vocal mechanism is undoubtedly important, singers can forget the rest of the body, which is an important part of resonance, power, and connection. If you are fixated on the vocal mechanism, try to bring your awareness to the whole torso, and then include the legs, arms, head, and feet as well. Similarly, feeling anxious or nervous while performing can create tension. To work with nerves while practicing or before a performance, give yourself a few breaths to notice what areas of your body are responding to the feelings of nerves, and see if you can mentally connect those areas to the whole of you. For example, while your neck might feel tight and tense, remembering that it is part of your whole spine and supported by all the buoyant connections within the spine and the ribcage can help you release the tension. Dont Let Tension Take Over! Whatever the cause of tension, it always has a physical manifestation that can be very uncomfortable and can interfere greatly with singing naturally and beautifully. As you become more in tune with how to sing without tension, use your awareness of your body to release tension in the following areas: The root of the tongue (it should be soft, not tight and hard) The jaw (release the muscles of the jaw to free the whole vocal mechanism, including the throat, the back of the neck, the head and mask and the tops of the shoulders) The soft palette (allowing it to rise up, or releasing any depression in the soft palette, can create more room for resonance) The throat (not tightening or constricting the throat allows the air to move easily) The mask (releasing any deadening in the sinuses, contraction in the eyes and forehead, and allowing the nose to be wide can create much more space for the sound) The intercostal muscles (in between the ribs; allowing these muscles to release allows the breath to move easily in and out without excess effort) The diaphragm and the back (the diaphragmâs connection to the ribs and back makes it essential for ease in singing, and the back is a wide and long swath of musculature that you can allow to expand to create more flexibility and freedom in your singing) The back line (think of this as a line that extends from your sacrum down through the buttocks and legs and into your heels; allowing it to lengthen into the ground ensures that you are not over-contracting the buttocks, legs, and ankles) With these tips, you can easily discover how to sing without tension! And in the process, you may also find even greater delight and enjoyment in exploring the craft of singing. Use these tips as a jumping off point for your own exploration of how your whole self â" body, mind, and soul â" acts as an open vessel for expressing everything a rich, meaningful voice has to offer. Building Childrens Confidence in School
Building Childrenâs Confidence in School School doesnt come easy for every child. It can be a challenging experience, and one that requires persistence and patience. Unfortunately, however, when school work becomes overly difficult, many children lose faith in themselves as students. Left uncorrected, this can have a lasting detrimental effect on a childs performance in school and overall attitude and demeanor. To pave the way for school success, parents should work to build their childrens self-confidence. Confident children do not shy away from hard work and will generally see failure as an opportunity to make changes and try again. How can you develop your childs confidence? Here are several tips: Be supportive. Children typically trust what their parents say as the truth, so its essential that parents regularly let them know that they believe in their abilities. To grow into capable, confident students, children need to feel supported by parents, not controlled. Let your child take the reins on homework and school and be on hand for help. Work together on goal setting. The process of goal setting helps children take control of their success, resulting in a greater willingness to attempt hard things and increased confidence that their efforts will yield good results. Encourage your child to lay out what he or she wants to achieve and the barriers standing in the way, as well as a plan to work around those obstacles. Foster independence. Whenever possible, parents should offer their children the chance to make decisions for themselves. Set high but achievable expectations, then put trust in your child to tackle tasks on his or her ownfrom homework to household chores. This will cultivate your childs sense of responsibility. Every accomplishment, however small or routine, gives your child the assurance that he or she is capable. Encourage doing new things. Parents who nudge their children to put themselves out there to try thingsfrom joining a new club to taking challenging classesare helping them grow and adapt to new situations. Always support your childs attempts to acquire new skills and learn from challenging endeavors. While parents cannot simply make their children confident, they can take note of their childrens strengths and encourage them to work hard, take initiative, persevere, and learn from their mistakes. These types of actions inspire children to go for what they want and strive to improve themselves as students and people, taking calculated risks along the way. Confidence, after all, is one of the building blocks for academic achievement. By making your child feel empowered and skilled, you are equipping him or her with the tools for lifelong school and career success. When we asked Amina what her key to success is, she said, âStaying focused helps me achieve my goals efficiently and effectively â" no matter what I am doing.â Already on the path to success, she will be able to achieve her goals as a future leader, and influence positive change around the world. Aminaâs hard work and discipline didnât go unnoticed, as she was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to Amina about her Kumon journey. How has Kumon helped you inside of the classroom? The Kumon Math Program has put me ahead of my peers since Iâve already worked on many of the concepts being covered in school. I can work independently on challenging equations. My teacher has given me the privilege to help mark my classmatesâ school work and help them with their math when needed. The Kumon Reading Program has expanded my vocabulary and I can easily summarize long reading passages. This really benefits me when we are reading novels in school. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has improved my focus and staying focused is extremely important no matter what I am doing. I have learned if I stay on task with completing my work on time, I can better balance my busy schedule. What is the most beneficial thing youâve learned in Kumon? My Instructor Jenny taught me that by doing a little bit of work each day, it will make a huge difference in the long run. If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? Incredible. What did it mean to you attending the Student Conference? It was such an honor to attend the Student Conference and learn from other Kumon Students. The experience was truly inspirational, and it encouraged me to work even harder, achieve higher, and challenge more. One day I would like to be one of the student speakers so I can motivate other Kumon Students. What advice do you have for other Kumon Students? If you are working on a challenging level, remember that a Kumon Program completer was once in your shoes. With their hard work, they kept going and were able to achieve greatness. First Year Anniversary Beach Party
First Year Anniversary Beach Party Tutorz Celebrates its First Year Anniversary with sun, food, and fun. Port Hueneme, California, July 18th, 2007. Re-released March 9th, 2011. The first year anniversary was a momentous occasion for all Tutorz stakeholders. The Saturday event not only marked a milestone in the companies development it also gave employees an opportunity to socialize in a casual setting outside of the office. The afternoon began with a wonderful presentation by Dirk Wagner, founder and CEO, that focused on site functionality and usage statistics. Mr. Wagner highlighted Tutorzâ success in saying: âIn one short year Tutorzâ has become the largest tutor referral site on the web indexing well over 10,000 tutors nationwide.â In addition to the educational lecture, appetizers, prepared by Dhammika, Human Resources Director at Tutorz, were a tasty treat for the audience. Shortly after the presentation everyone gathered for a group photo, squinting in the sun, most of the guests managed to keep their eyes open in what turned out to be a great photo, âthanks Tutorz Family.â Following the photo many guests enjoyed a walk on the Port Hueneme pier, which was full of fisherman that particular afternoon. A great fishing spot, everyone observed as fisherman baited hooks and dropped lines in hope of a meal for the evening. Lucky for the Tutorz Family their host had already caught our fish at the local grocer and was preparing a spectacular meal as they enjoyed the scenic stroll. Youth at the event had some fun as well and got a chance to show off their athletic abilities at the pier. Anthony, a middle school student in attendance, ripped up the surf on his sponge as others from the Tutorz Family watched and cheered him on. No celebration could be complete without a wonderful feast to round out the evening. Everyone bellied up to the table after the walk to enjoy a delicious Barb-B-Que complete with salmon, chicken, corn, and other goodies. Leaving the event with a happy belly and a sense of greater accomplishment Saturday evening the Tutorz Family is excited and motivated for the future. Looking forward to another year of success, employees are focusing on changing the way people think about finding a good tutor in their area.
